We study machine learning and data mining. If we were to compare research to mountain climbing, our goal is to climb to the summit of a mountain that no one has reached. We write and publish about our achievements. However, if we were to ask people to climb a mountain right now, you would be at a loss. Therefore, we will first take you on a mountain hike as a form of training to experience a research cycle. After that, we hope that you will choose your own mountain based on your interests and concerns, and take on a new challenge.
Machine learning and data mining are fields of artificial intelligence research, and we use mathematical models based on probability, statistics, and linear algebra. We deal with a wide range of data analysis issues, from proposing new models to taking on problems that have been considered unsolved, and even implementing data analysis for real-world measurements. In many cases, we set problems by considering the need for technology in society on various time scales.
The cycle of researching basic technology, applying it, and then getting feedback is important. It takes a long time to go through the whole cycle, so we want to have one person working on the issues at each stage and then have the team go through the cycle. The diagram below is an illustration of the cycle. The houses are where each person develops a new model. The clouds are the points of contact with society, and the new models are active in various situations. Sometimes a new model is useful, and sometimes it fails. From this experience, it is necessary to obtain new hints and insight to develop the next model. Also, when trying to solve specific problems in society, it is often sufficient to use mature technology rather than the latest technology.
